Is SEO Part of Website Design? Here’s What 5 Years in the Industry Has Taught Me

If you’ve ever typed “is SEO part of website design” into Google, you’re probably staring at a beautiful website (maybe even one you built yourself) wondering why no one is finding it.

I get this question all the time from wedding and creative business owners who are exhausted from constantly posting on social media just to stay visible. They want to get found; not just liked.

So let’s answer it clearly: yes, SEO is absolutely part of website design. Not an add-on. Not a separate service you tack on later. It’s baked into the structure of your site from the very first wireframe.

Here’s why, and what that actually looks like in practice.

Why Beautiful Websites Still Don’t Get Found

I’ve been running my digital marketing agency for five years, helping wedding and creative businesses with branding, web design, and social media. For the last two years, I’ve been designing websites specifically, and I can tell you this with confidence: I’ve seen a lot of gorgeous websites that were never designed properly from an SEO standpoint, and it shows.

They have stunning photography, beautiful fonts, and thoughtful branding. But they don’t rank. They don’t get discovered by new clients searching Google. All that work, and it’s invisible.

Here’s the thing most business owners don’t realize: search engines and AI tools don’t “see” your website the way a human does. They read the structure; that means headings, navigation, alt text and meta descriptions. This is the language search engines use to understand what your site is about and who it’s relevant to. If that structure isn’t there, it doesn’t matter how beautiful the site looks. It’s essentially speaking a language Google can’t understand.

The Biggest Misconception About SEO

In almost every consultation call, I hear some version of the same misconception: “SEO is just about keywords, right?”

It’s not. Keywords matter, but they’re only one piece. The structure of your website, how your pages are organized, how your headings are built and how your navigation flows, plays just as big a role in whether you get found. You can stuff a page with the right keywords and still get buried on page five if the underlying structure isn’t built to support it.

This is the piece that gets missed constantly, and it’s exactly why I believe SEO has to be part of the design process, not something you bolt on after the site is live.

A Real Example: From Page Three to Page One in 28 Days

I worked with a family and newborn photographer who had DIY’d her original website when she first started her business. It looked fine, but she was ready to level up, and she wasn’t showing up anywhere near the top of Google for the searches that actually mattered to her business.

We rebuilt her site with SEO baked into the design from day one. Specifically, we:

  • Restructured the site and simplified the navigation
  • Added proper alt text to every image
  • Wrote meta descriptions for each page
  • Rebuilt the heading structure so it clearly reflected what she offered and where she served
  • Made the entire site mobile-friendly

Twenty-eight days after launch, she moved from page three of Google to page one for her target searches.

That’s not a typo. Twenty-eight days. Most people assume SEO takes six months or more to show any results, and while long-term SEO strategy absolutely takes ongoing work, this is proof that getting the foundational structure right from the start can create real, fast movement.

What Building a Site With SEO in Mind Actually Looks Like

I want to pull back the curtain a little, because “SEO baked into design” can sound vague if you don’t know what it actually involves. Here’s how it works in my process:

Onboarding and Research

During onboarding, we figure out exactly what the client is looking for and, just as importantly, their geographical service area. A wedding photographer serving one city needs a very different structure than one who travels regionally or nationally.

Keyword Research Before Design Begins

Before any wireframing happens, we do keyword research. This isn’t about stuffing words onto a page — it’s about knowing exactly which words and phrases we want to build the heading structure around, so the site is clear (to both humans and search engines) about what it offers and who it’s for.

Building With Structure in Mind

From there, we build out the homepage with that heading structure and keyword strategy already in place, and send it to the client for approval. SEO isn’t a checklist we run through after the design is “done” — it’s part of the design decisions from the very first page.

What Happens When You Try to Add SEO Later

I want to be honest here, because I think this is where a lot of business owners get stuck.

If you build your website first and try to add SEO later, it gets complicated. Your existing site may not have the proper foundation — like a clear heading structure — and retrofitting that can mean significant rebuilding, which costs more in both time and money than if it had been planned from the start.

That said, it’s not hopeless. Even after a site is built, there are still smaller changes that can make a real difference:

  • Adding or improving alt text
  • Writing or updating meta descriptions
  • Building out internal linking between pages

These won’t replace a proper structural foundation, but they can meaningfully help a site that’s already live. If your site was DIY’d or built without SEO in mind, it doesn’t mean starting over — it means being strategic about where to focus first.

So, Is SEO Part of Website Design?

Yes. Full stop.

If you want a website that actually works for your business — one that brings in inquiries without you having to post on social media every single day — SEO can’t be an afterthought. It has to be part of the structure from the very beginning: the navigation, the headings, the alt text, the meta descriptions, all of it working together so search engines (and the humans using them) can actually find and understand your site.

I’ve seen what happens when it’s done right. A photographer who once sat on page three of Google moved to page one in less than a month, simply because her new site was built with structure and search in mind from day one.

If you’re tired of relying on social media to bring in clients and you’re ready for a website that actually gets found, I’d love to talk about what that could look like for your business. Book a call with me, and let’s build a site that works as hard as you do.
